Ambassador LI Chenggang Attends the Launch Event of WTO Publication on Illicit Trade in Food and Food Fraud

On 28 May 2024, the World Trade Organization (WTO) held an Launch Event of the Report on Illicit Trade In Food and Food Fraud. Ambassador Li Chenggang was invited as one of the distinguished panelists to share his perspectives in this area.

After sharing China’s experiences and practices in recent years, Ambassador Li underscored that WTO should play and actually have already played an active role in helping members tackle illicit food trade through promoting the normal trade in food. The current WTO rulebook recognizes members’ right to regulate the safety of imported products, helps members reduce technical barriers in food trade, and eliminates overly cumbersome customs procedures and burdensome red tapes. The best way WTO should play in addressing illicit trade in food and food fraud is to ensure a smooth flow of normal trade.

In the face of new challenges in a changing world, WTO platform can be utilized to strengthen cooperation and experience sharing. Ambassador Li further mentioned that the TBT Ministerial Declaration delivered during the MC13 also provided a way forward for dealing with new changes.

WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Deputy Director-General Jean-Marie Pauga,Permanent Representative of Mauritius to the WTO Ambassador Usha Chandnee Dwarka-Canabady and others also attended this event.
