The last plenary meeting of Dialogue on Plastics Pollution and Environmentally Sustainable Plastics Trade before MC13 was held on 26 January 2024. Chaired by Ambassador LI Chenggang, the meeting was attended by more than 100 delegates from WTO members, international organizations, non-governmental organizations and academia. In his remarks, Ambassador LI Chenggang commended all participating members and more than 40 stakeholders for their overwhelming support, active participation, constant passion and sincere cooperation. It was the more than 600 comments from WTO members and stakeholders on the Ministerial Statement that led to the stabilized text. The Ministerial Statement shows the political will and commitment of trade ministers, and reflects the direction and measures of actively exploring WTO reform. The spirit of solidarity and cooperation shown by WTO members in this Dialogue brings hope for solving the challenge of plastic pollution as well as various international issues. That is, through solidarity, cooperation, reform and innovation, we could jointly build an equal and orderly multi-polar world as well as an inclusive and sustainable economic globalization that benefits all.
Ambassadors and Representatives of other three DPP coordinators, including Morocco, Ecuador, and Australia, shared their views and clarification on the statement. Representatives of more than 20 WTO members and stakeholders thanked the coordinators and the Secretariat for their efforts in reaching the Ministerial Statement, agreed that the statement is a good balance of members' positions and concerns, and made suggestions for further improvement of the DPP. At the end of the meeting, the MC13 Ministerial Statement and the factual compilations attached were stabilized. The coordinators will hold a press conference during MC13, and welcome members to continue to put forward opinions and suggestions on the post-MC13 work plan.
